Sahabat Rakyat Working Committee released the statement below on 5 February 2024 (Monday) in response to the incident of Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement and family of late Teoh Beng Hock chasing the Anwar-led unity government for the truth of Teoh's unjust death:
❶
Sahabat Rakyat Working Committee wish to express our sincere respect and heartfelt support to Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement and family of late Teoh Beng Hock for their perseverance in pursuing the truth of Teoh Beng Hock’s unjust death with the unity government. The association and Teoh's family are unhappy with Prime Minister Anwar's repeated refusal to meet (them). We fully empathise and sympathise their decision to pay Anthony Loke a visit at the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Headquarters at Pudu on Chap Goh Meh day (i.e. 24 February 2024) and to inquire about the investigation progress of the death of Teoh.
❷
People of all ethnic groups nationwide know that Teoh Beng Hock (born in 1979) was the political aide of the former Selangor State EXCO, Ean Yong Hian Wah and a grassroots cadre of DAP. On 15 July 2009, Teoh was taken away by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and his body was found lying on the terrace on the fifth floor of the MACC building the next day. Although the relevant authorities deliberately created a false impression that “Teoh committed suicide”, in September 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that "one or more unknown persons caused the death of Teoh Beng Hock, including MACC officers.” This is already an unquestionable fact!
❸
Today, people of all ethnic groups have witnessed that MACC is capable to bring to light the source and movement of the huge assets of Mahathir’s and Daim's families over the decades, both domestically and abroad, based on the information uncovered in the Pandora Papers.
On the other hand, after Anwar, who has always bragged himself as the "leader of democratic reform", becomes the prime minister, he has been ignoring the aspiration of late Teoh Beng Hock's family and democrats nationwide (including the vast grassroots cadres and members of DAP), not revealing the truth of Teoh’s unjust death nor arresting the murderer(s) of Teoh. The masses are agitated and perplexed: Isn’t Beng Hock’s life a (valuable) life?
❹
Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement and family of late Teoh Beng Hock decided to pay Anthony Loke, the Secretary General of DAP a New Year visit at DAP Headquarters at Pudu on Chap Goh Meh to express their hope that “when people are reunited under this day of full moon, DAP will still remember that Teoh’s family has not been able to reunite with their family for over 15 years." They also hope that Anthony Loke will not follow Anwar’s footsteps, forgetting the victims on the road to democracy after taking/coming into power. People of all ethnic groups across the country are waiting to see how will Minister Loke respond. Those who are farsighted also understand thatthe key to whether Teoh's unjust death can be vindicated and whether the murderer will be severely punished lies with Anwar and the MACC.
❺
Lim Teck Ghee, a well-known scholar once mentioned in an article in commemoration of Teoh Beng Hock, that the reason why Teoh’s unjust case occurred and was negated may be related to the deep state that continues to operate relatively unchecked. Not only Teoh Beng Hock’s case, similar “missing” cases such as Joshua Hilmy, Ruth Sitepu, Raymond Koh and Amri Che Mat are happening which have also not seen justice being served. Don't they all prove the existence and significance of the deep state? The existence and significance of this deep state can’t be achieved by counting on the call of a couple of "saviour-liked" political leaders, but by the broad masses uniting to fight resolutely. Every success in reducing the influence of the deep state can move the country's democracy a step further.
