JUDGE AT FIRST OPS SCORPENE HEARING AT
THE GRAND TRIBUNAL IN PARIS
PRESS STATEMENT: 20 APRIL 2012
Three board members of SUARAM – Dr Kua Kia Soong, Cynthia Gabriel, Fadiah Nadwa – presented their case for the pursuit of suspected commissions that were paid in the purchase of the two Scorpene submarines.
They appeared before Judge Roger Le Loire with their lawyer Joseph Breham. SUARAM brought its complaints on behalf of Malaysian tax payers to uncover the suspected commissions which have been paid over the more than RM7 billion Scorpene submarine.
Dr Kua presented the case for our pinning our hopes on the judicial hearing in France after the disappointing trial over the Altantuya murder, the ineffectual MACC, the suppression of information in Malaysia and the lack of transparency in the parliamentary questions over the Scorpene commissions.
Investigations by the French prosecutors so far point fingers at Malaysian Officials
According to our lawyer, Joseph Breham,
“Investigations on the French side so far have provided sufficient evidence to point fingers at specific Malaysian officials’ involvement in the Scorpene commissions. For us to arrive at this stage of the hearing is a gigantic step in the pursuit of the Scorpene commissions, one of the biggest corruption scandals in Malaysia in recent years. ”
From the evidence that has been made available to SUARAM as the complainant in this case, sufficient evidence is now available to incriminate specified Malaysian officials.
Judge Le Loire asked SUARAM to proffer a list of potential witnesses as the case proceeds. SUARAM duly proposed Abdul Razak Baginda, the defence minister Zahid Hamidi, PI Balasubramaniam, Setev Shariibuu, Jasbir Singh Chahl, Tan Sri Lodin and Mazlinda.
